💡 Avast has discovered a vulnerability in the cryptography of the DoNex ransomware family. Specialists have already released a free file decryption tool that victims can use to recover their data.
The company says it has been working with law enforcement agencies since March 2024 to privately provide DoNex victims with a data decryption tool. This tactic is often used by IS companies to prevent attackers from learning of the bug and remediating it.
✅ Now that the DoNex vulnerability has been publicly disclosed at Recon 2024, Avast has decided to make the decryptor available to everyone.
DoNext is a rebranding of the DarkRace malware, which in turn was a rebranding of the Muse malware first discovered back in the spring of 2022.
The vulnerability found by Avast affects all past versions of the DoNex family of encryptors, including the fake Lockbit 3.0 used as Muse in November 2022.
👉 According to experts, recent DoNex activity has mainly been in the US, Italy and Belgium, but the malware has also spread to other countries around the world.
